Paintings
Opening Saturday 25 april 4-6 pm

In 1984 Tomasz Ciecierski had his first exhibition here- exactly 25 years ago.
In the preceding years he was granted a summer studio on Prinseneiland in Amsterdam,
by the Stedelijk Museum. That is where I first saw his work.
Then as now he lived in Warsaw, albeit in very different circumstances.
Crossing the border with an exhibition was an adventure.
After a stay in the US (1972-1973) his work showed the influence of late Pop Art and of
Cy Twombly.
In all of his paintings a certain merging of painting and drawing is noticeable. The Polish painting tradition has left no traces in Ciecierski's oeuvre- yet his work cannot be labeled as 'western'.
His canvases are most often composed of several parts, some of them large, mostly
small. The original reason is rather prosaic: he had no room in the small attic which he had
secretly occupied in his mother's apartment building to mount large canvases. His
longing for a better and brighter world and the resulting quest for light and air are still apparent
in his work today. But he has always managed to keep a distance from impressionist tendencies
and to avoid sentimentality.
His sense of humor and relativity have helped him there.
In this exhibition he has played with the concept of a painting as an object.
These combined objects with their projected shadows have represent allusions to landscapes
and to the twilight zone after sundown.
