This will be our sixteenth gallery show of
Theo Kuijpers (1939), the artist longest connected with Wetering Galerie - in fact since 1976, three years after the gallery had been initiated.
His long career, first as a sculptor, then as a painter, started out with his version of what was then called Spurensicherung, the exploration of one’s origins- a movement that originated in Germany. So his early work was deeply rooted in the soil of his native province of Brabant.
Many travels and a stay of half a year in New York City on a PS One scholarship, soon extended his cultural scope. In 1979 he became acquainted with the Aboriginal culture in Australia, through visits to Darwin and Arnhemland.
A few years ago Theo Kuijpers stayed in Australia for a third period, having been asked to show his work in Sydney. The paintings in this exhibition are a subdued reflection on Aboriginal art and on his own earlier works.
