In de tentoonstelling in Wetering Galerie zal een groot werk van Hinke Schreuders te zien zijn, dat voor het eerst werd gepresenteerd in de tentoonstelling ‘Wonderland’ in Kunsthal KaDE in Amersfoort.
‘Into the woods’ toont de eerste pagina van een uit 1880 daterend prentenboek van het sprookje Roodkapje, uitgevoerd in zwarte kruissteken op een doek van ruim 3 bij 2 meter.
Het werk bestaat uit beeld – een donker bos, onder de overhangende takken in de verte een huisje, een echo van een meisjesfiguur - en tekst: de eerste alinea van een sprookje waarin de hoofdrolspeelster op pad gaat.
Het doek loopt, als was het een ruimtelijk landschap, uit op de vloer, waar een handtasje staat. Het tasje is, voor wie goed kijkt, gevuld met zwarte vilten fallussen - een verwijzing naar een eerdere installatie.
Daarnaast is er een serie kleine werken op papier te zien - losse pagina’s van damesbladen uit de jaren ‘50 en ‘60 die op doek geplakt zijn. De bladzijden met foto’s van mannequins die de laatste mode uit die tijd tonen, zijn bewerkt met inkt en garen.
Door middel van associatieve toevoegingen en ingrepen krijgen de oorspronkelijke foto’s een andere sfeer. De vrouwen kijken angstig of juist verwachtingsvol om, in een duistere omgeving. Er lijkt, net als in de werken die refereren aan Roodkapje, een gevaar op de loer te liggen, maar wat dat gevaar precies is wordt niet duidelijk.
In haar nieuwe werken probeert Hinke Schreuders eerder dingen te suggereren dan ze expliciet te benoemen, een sfeer op te roepen van verborgen seksualiteit en verleiding. Ze mengt frontale beeldelementen met subtiele verwijzingen, die samen een dubbelzinnige ‘taal’ vormen.

Hinke Schreuders' new exhibition will show her major work 'Into the Woods', first presented earlier this year in 'Wonderland', the opening show of the wonderful new museum KaDE in Amersfoort.
'Into the Woods' is based on the first page of a picture book from 1880, featuring Little Red Riding Hood, executed here in black cross-stitches on a canvas that is 3 by 2 meters. The work consists of imagery: a dark wood, a small house in the distance sheltered by overhanging trees, the echo of a girl figure and text; the first paragraph of a fairy tale with the heroine setting off. The canvas, as if a spatial landscape, finishes on the floor where there is a handbag filled with black phalluses, a reference to an earlier installation.
There will also be a series of small works. Schreuders has taken loose pages from ladies’ magazines from the fifties and sixties. The pages with their pictures of models showing the latest fashion of those days have been treated with ink and yarn. Associated additions and changes have infused the original photographs with a different atmosphere. The women look around anxiously, or expectantly in the dark surroundings. Just as in the works referring to Little Red Riding Hood, danger appears to be lurking, though what the danger might be is unclear.
In her new works, Hinke Schreuders prefers to suggest things rather than state them explicitly. They are works evocative of a hidden sexuality and seductiveness. Hinke has mixed confrontational elements and subtle allusions, thus shaping a language both new and ambiguous.
