In his new paintings, Sander van Deurzen depicts a world that is furious and has overtones of the grotesque.
Control is a key word in the Western world in many contexts.
Van Deurzen’s paintings, on the other hand, turn order and system upside down. He has changed the world into a carnival by making a caricature of the madness of both television and the abundant magazines and papers shouting their messages.
Absurdist crudity and existential fragments abound. The paintings are based on images taken from the media, but rather than being actual copies of these images, are reflections of his memories of these images.
Recognizable shapes and figures are, here and there, allowed to emerge in the process of his painting, through his solid technique of rapid brush strokes of acrylic paint.
Advertising’s obsessive concentration on vitality and youth is addressed by Sander van Deurzen, who attempts to show life as being both amusing and tragic at the same time.
And so, omnipresent in his paintings is a sense of decay and decline- with a hint of humor.
